Sounds like pretty sound advice, doesn’t it? But if the secret to happiness was that simple, then why does there seem to be an abundance of angry, unhappy people these days? Is there a secret to being happy? Having been on both ends of the spectrum, I think there is. I honestly believe you can learn how to be happy, just as you can learn any other “skill”. If you look around you’ll notice that folks who are happy tend to follow a certain set of habits. These habits create a peacefulness in their lives that allow them to let go of things and find joy -even when life is not perfect; if you learn to apply these habits in your own life, there’s a good chance you’ll be happy too.
I’ve come up with a a short list of habits for you to practice that will help make for a happier you:
Count your blessings
It’s easy – especially when we are busy-to forget all of the good stuff you have going on. Your life is so much more enjoyable when you are constantly thankful for the things that make you happy. Changing how you think about things can make a huge difference in your life. Doing so has been linked to happier moods and even better physical health. So go find those positive pants, and put them on!
Smiling can instantly improve your mood. So try to smile and maybe even laugh a little bit… Surprisingly, if you don’t feel like it at first… you will get there. Don’t under estimate the power of laughter and smiling… it’s like medicine for your soul.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
If the issue you’re unhappy about won’t matter in a year, a month, a week or even tomorrow, why sweat it? Happy people know how to “Let it go….”
Surround yourself with good people
Choose your friends wisely. It’s true we are most like those we hang out with, so if your pals are a bunch of Debbie Downers don’t expect to be much different.
Focus on acceptance
Remember not everything in your life is going to be perfect. And guess what? That makes your perfectly normal. Happy people know to accept setbacks/situations in their life that they cannot change, and instead work on changing what they can control for the better.
Do Unto Others
Studies show the happiest people are those that help others..the great thing about this is it doesn’t have to be anything grand:
Open a door. Say thank you.
Bring a friend a surprise donut and coffee. (Hint hint)
Rake your neighbors yard. Offer to babysit for a young couple.
Just do something for someone else.
You’ll not only spread a little joy around…but it will make you happy, too!
